Celebrate 151 Years of Derby Legends: The Most Iconic Moments in Kentucky Derby History

The Kentucky Derby is more than a race—it’s a legacy. As we prepare for the 151st Run for the Roses® on Saturday, May 3, 2025, we honor the unforgettable performances, record-breaking feats, and iconic stories that have made this event America’s Greatest Race®.

Since its first running in 1875, the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs has stood the test of time, delivering moments that live on in racing history—and in the hearts of fans around the world.
Here’s a look back at the top historical moments that define the Kentucky Derby legacy.

🐎 1. 1875 – The Inaugural Kentucky Derby

It all began on May 17, 1875, when Aristides captured victory in the first-ever Kentucky Derby before a crowd of 10,000. Trained by Ansel Williamson and ridden by Oliver Lewis—both African American pioneers—the win laid the foundation for what would become the longest continually held sporting event in the United States.

🐎 2. 1973 – Secretariat Shatters the Record

No list is complete without Secretariat, whose 1973 Derby win remains one of the greatest performances in racing history. “Big Red” not only won, but set a track record of 1:59 2/5, a time that still stands today. It was the beginning of a Triple Crown sweep that rewrote the history books.

🐎 3. 2009 – Mine That Bird’s 50-1 Shock

Underdog stories don’t get better than this. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 longshot, charged from the back of the pack to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby in one of the most dramatic upsets in modern racing. The ride by jockey Calvin Borel, who hugged the rail with perfect timing, is the stuff of Derby legend.

🐎 4. 2015 – American Pharoah Begins Triple Crown Glory

In 2015, American Pharoah ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought, but it all started under the Twin Spires. His Derby win showcased his dominance and composure, setting the tone for his sweep of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. He remains one of the most beloved champions of the modern era.

🐎 5. 2018 – Justify’s Unbeaten Rise to History

Three years later, Justify would follow in Pharoah’s footsteps—but with a twist: he became the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win the Derby without racing as a 2-year-old. His powerful performance made him only the second undefeated Triple Crown winner in history.

🐎 6. 2024 – Mystik Dan Wins Derby 150 in a Photo Finish

Last year’s 150th Kentucky Derby gave us another unforgettable finish. Mystik Dan, trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., edged out his rivals in a photo finish, winning by just a nose. The victory added to the legacy of close calls and unforgettable drama on racing’s biggest stage.
