The Tabulator racks up Derby points, Breeders’ Cup berth in Iroquois

Carolyn Wilson’s The Tabulator opened the 2018 Kentucky Derby (G1) points chase with a victory in Saturday’s $150,000 Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The winner of his first two starts in sprints, the Larry Rivelli juvenile was stretching out to two turns here, but remained perfect so far. Aside from banking 10 points toward the Derby, The Tabulator also earned a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) going this same 1 1/16-mile distance November 4 at Del Mar.

The Tabulator, sent off as the 4-1 third choice with jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., stalked the early pace set by 21-1 longshot Smart Remark, took over rounding the far turn, and opened up into the stretch. Hollywood Star, the 6-5 favorite, reduced the gap to three-quarters of a length at the wire, and 3-1 second choice Ten City checked in a non-threatening third. The 65-1 Ebben was a troubled fourth. They each earned Derby points for their efforts, Hollywood Star receiving 4 points, Ten City 2 points, and Ebben 1 point.

Based at Arlington Park, The Tabulator romped by nine lengths in his unveiling on the Polytrack. He shipped to Prairie Meadows for a stakes debut in the Prairie Gold Juvenile, rolling from just off the pace to score convincingly.

The Tabulator was sired by Dialed In, eighth as the favorite in the 2011 Kentucky Derby. Sold for $460,000 in March at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s two-year-olds in training sale, the dark bay colt has bankrolled $143,550.
