Five runners competed in Sunday’s Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) at ParisLongchamp after the scratch of early favorite St Mark’s Basilica, but only one – Sealiway – really handled the heavy going in a lopsided result. Trained by Frederic Rossi and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, the French-bred colt opened up by eight lengths in the stretch as his rivals toiled.
Le Haras de la Gousserie and Guy Pariente’s Sealiway, the 2.90-1 second choice, took up a close stalking position as British shipper Cairn Gorm set the pace. The other Brit, 3-5 favorite Nando Parrado, was nestled just behind them. When Sealiway made his move, the others could not pick up, and the Lagardere quickly became a one-horse show.
Sealiway earned a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) as well as 10 points on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby. Nando Parrado was best of the rest, good for 4 points. Laws of Indices and the filly Libertine received 2 points and 1 point, respectively, in third and fourth. Cairn Gorm dropped back to last.
Now sporting a 6-4-1-1 mark, Sealiway won his first two starts and placed third in his stakes debut in the Prix Roland de Chambure here. The chestnut dominated next time in the Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy. Up to Group company for the Sept. 6 Prix la Rochette (G3) back at this course and distance, Sealiway was runner-up to Go Athletico, who as a gelding was not eligible for the Lagardere.
Sealiway is by Galiway (a son of Galileo) and out of the stakes-winning Kensea, herself a Pariente homebred by Kendargent.
