Making Money with Justify in the Belmont Stakes
Jun 06, 2018 John Mucciolo/TwinSpires.com
Unbeaten star JUSTIFY is sure to be an odds-on favorite for the 150th Belmont Stakes (G1). The superb colt was assigned the rail post on Tuesday evening and will aim to become just the second unbeaten Triple Crown winner in history, following the immortal Seattle Slew.
With a short-priced favorite at the forefront it will not be easy to churn out a mega-score in the ‘Test of Champions’.
But there is money to be made even if the big horse wins.
In 2015 when American Pharoah cruised home in front of clear 4-1 second-choice Frosted, the superfecta yielded a nice $285 (for $1).
The Belmont is often a jockeys’ race. I give a big edge to the locally based riders with ample experience over ‘Big Sandy’.
#4 HOFBURG(9-2) (Irad Ortiz), #6 GRONKOWSKI(12-1) (Jose Ortiz), #8 VINO ROSSO (8-1) (John Velazquez) and #9 NOBLE INDY (30-1) (Javier Castellano) will be the key horses underneath.
With that foursome, not only do we get the perennially leading pilots in New York, we also have trainers Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown and Bill Mott in our corner. It’s hard to argue with the logic.
I mapped out a few conservative plays that could be rewarding.
$1 Superfecta: 1 with 4,8 with 4,6,8,9 with 4,6,8,9 = $12
$1 Trifecta: 1 with 4,6,8,9 with 4,6,8,9 = $12
$3 Exacta: 1 with 6,9 = $6
And in the case that Justify finishes second:
$1 Trifecta 4,6,8,9 with 1 with 4,6,8,9 = $12
$2 Exacta 4,6,8,9 with 1 = $8
Good Luck and Happy Belmont Betting!
