Multiple stakes winner Mackinnon
heads an 11-horse field in Saturday’s $100,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden
Gate Fields. Contested over 1 1/8 miles on a Tapeta track, the El Camino Real
Derby is worth a combined 17 points to the top four finishers (10-4-2-1 scale)
as a Road to the Kentucky Derby series qualifier.

Last year’s winner, Rombauer, went on to capture the
Preakness (G1), and Saturday’s El Camino Real Derby victor will receive an
automatic berth to the second leg of the Triple Crown on May 21.

Third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Mackinnon recorded
turf wins in the Zuma Beach S. and Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. last season. The American
Pharoah colt broke slowly when switching to dirt in the Jan. 1 Sham S, (G3) at
Santa Anita, checking in fourth, but Mackinnon is eligible to rebound in this
spot for two-time Kentucky Derby winner Doug O’Neill. Abel Cedillo will be in
for the mount.

Boise, a rallying
winner of the Gold Rush S. at Golden Gate two back, merits respect for Jonathon
Wong. By Temple City, the dark bay colt will be running late with Evin Roman.

Stormy Samurai and
Unraptured will look to make an
impact following nice allowance tallies at Golden Gate. William Antongeorgi has
the call on Stormy Samurai for Jack Steiner, and Armando Ayuso will be back up
on Unraptured for Tim McCanna.

Stakes winner Dr Prescado,
third in the Gold Rush last out, is also part of the mix. Pedro Terrero has the
call for Felix Rondan. Other contestants include stakes-placed C’Mon Man, and last-out maiden winners Blackadder, Del Mo, and Il Bellator.
