Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Weyburn

Chiefswood Stables homebred Weyburn garnered 50 points on the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series following his game triumph in the $300,000 Gotham S. (G3) at Aqueduct on March 6. The three-year-old earned his first stakes victory when enduring one-mile on the fast dirt surface in 1:38.70 with Trevor McCarthy in the controls.
Weyburn improved his career line to 4-2-1-0, $227,520 after posting the biggest win of his lifetime. The Jimmy Jerkens pupil made his first appearance at Belmont Park on October 10 in a six-furlong maiden special event, and he finished a well-beaten fifth following a wide voyage. In his second assignment, the son of Pioneerof the Nile moved up to seven furlongs in a similar race at Aqueduct and showed marked improvement with a strong runner-up performance. He preceded his Gotham score with a maiden tally at Aqueduct on December 5 while capping his two-year-old campaign.
The Ontario-bred was produced from the unraced A.P. Indy mare Sunday Affair, who counts herself as a full-sister to stakes vixen Million Seller. Two-time Grade 3 winner Yorkton is a half-brother to Weyburn, as is the dual stakes placed Nipigon.
This powerful female line has been responsible for numerous standout performers, led by nine-time Grade 1-winning champion Sky Beauty, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. Grade 1 stars Pleasant Home, Pine Island, Point of Entry, Violence, Tale of Ekati, Guarana, and Maplejinsky, are just some of the top performers that are found on the rich catalog page.
Weyburn earned a robust 104 Brisnet Speed figure for his work in the Gotham, which represents his lifetime best number. The dark bay colt has a lot of room to improve with additional seasoning, and he will likely move forward as the distances increase, as well. He is from a sensational family with class throughout, and while his half-brother excels going one turn, it appears that Weyburn will do his best running at extended trips. I think that the colt is a sleeper on the Triple Crown Trail.
The $750,000 Wood Memorial S. (G2) on April 3 at Aqueduct is the next possible spot for the late-developing sophomore.
