Owen wins the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs.
Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing, LLC’s Owen Almighty picked up 50 points on the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series following his 3 1/2-length triumph in the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 7. Trained by Brian Lynch and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., the winner clocked 1 1/16 miles on the fast main surface in a swift 1:42.30.
'He was just waiting on horses and kind of looking around,' Ortiz said of past starts. 'Today when I tapped him, he jumped on the bridle, and I said 'Let's roll.'
Chancer McPatrick, Hill Road, Patch Adams, and Brodeur rounded out the top five and earned qualifying points on a 25-15-10-5 basis, respectively.

Owen Almighty was unveiled on June 20 at Churchill Downs and drew off to a commanding debut score in a 5 1/2-furlong dash. He came back with a daylight victory in the Juvenile S. at Ellis Park in his second assignment, prior to concluding his sharp two-year-old season with a runner-up result in the Iroquois S. (G3) beneath the Twin Spires on September 14.
He commenced 2025 by crossing the wire in first and then disqualified to fifth in the Pasco S. at Tampa Bay Downs, and he preceded his Derby win with a strong second in the Sam F. Davis S. over the same surface. His lifetime line now reads 6-3-2-0, $484,310.
The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State by Mark Stanley and passed through the auction ring on a pair of occasions. He brought a closing bid of $360,000 as a weanling at the 2022 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, prior to bringing the gavel down at $350,000 at The Saratoga Sale in August of 2023. The colt is the first black-type winner produced from the Grade-2 placed Bayern mare Tempers Rising.
Owen Almighty has registered Brisnet Speed numbers of 90-97-95 from a trio of outings as a three-year-old, which included a healthy 108 Late Pace figure in his latest performance. The son of Speightstown has two potential races on the horizon at Churchill on May 3, according to his connections – either the Kentucky Derby (G1) or the $600,000 Pat Day Mile S. (G2).
