Terry Stephens’ Chunk of Gold has picked up 75 points on the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series to secure his spot in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on May 3. The Ethan West trainee was last seen rallying for a runner-up result in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 22.

The gray colt was unveiled on Dec. 19 and was a winner on debut when rallying for a score in a maiden special weight event at Turfway Park while running six furlongs. By Preservationist, he came back at the same venue on Jan. 18 in the Leonatus S. at the one-mile distance, and Chunk of Gold came from off the pace to finish a clear second at the wire. He preceded his Louisiana Derby effort with a second-place showing in the Risen Star S. (G2), and his lifetime line now reads 4-1-3-0, $348,818.

Chunk of Gold was bred in the Bluegrass State by 2023 Brereton C. Jones and was purchased for the bargain price of $2,500 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale. The sophomore was produced from the Cairo Prince mare Play for Gold, and he counts himself as a full-brother to 2024 Martha Washington S. queen Band of Gold.

The contender has earned Brisnet Speed figures of 85-83-94-98 from four lifetime efforts, with his top two numbers coming in his two career outings on the dirt. He will need to improve once again to challenge the top guns in the Derby, but the hard-trying colt hasn’t done much wrong to date and continues to train forwardly. I feel that Chunk of Gold is an interesting longshot threat from off the pace in Louisville with continued ascension.
