Built earned 10 points on the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Built earned 10 points on the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby after posting a front-running, 6 3/4-length score in the $96,000 Gun Runner S. at Fair Grounds on Dec. 21. Trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by Jareth Loveberry, the youngster negotiated 1 1/16 miles on the fast main surface in 1:43.53 en route to achieving stakes glory for the initial time.
“You always like it when the pace is slow and you’re on the lead,” Catalano said. “Drawing the rail with speed, he handled it well. These are the moments you work every day and get up in the morning for. Today was our day. I appreciate the opportunities all our clients give us and all our help back in the barn.”
Magnitude, Render Judgment, Admiral Dennis, and Chris’s Revenge completed the order of finish and earned qualifying points on a 5-3-2-1 basis, respectively.
Built debuted on Aug. 24 in a sprint at Ellis Park and finished fourth (later placed third via disqualification) behind subsequent Grade 1 hero East Avenue. In his second assignment, the colt took command in the lane to graduate at Keeneland on Oct. 6 in a seven-furlong maiden special weight. His lifetime line now reads 3-2-0-0, $124,204.
The son of Hard Spun was bred in the Bluegrass State by Robert and Lawana Low and passed through the auction ring on a pair of occasions. He attracted a final bid of $82,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, prior bringing the gavel down at $260,000 at the 2024 OBS April Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.
Built is the initial black-type winner produced from the Curlin mare Sea Garden, who counts herself as a half-sister to the Grade 2-winning Glenville Gardens. This is the same female line of 1999 Test S. (G1) queen Marley Vale, as well as her daughter Indian Vale, who was a four-time graded stakes victress.
The intriguing prospect has improved with each lifetime try to date while registering Brisnet Speed numbers of 74-89-94, and the colt also earned a hefty 106 Late Pace figure in his route debut in the Gun Runner. He figures to inherit stamina from both sides of his pedigree page, and the bay is obviously moving in the right direction heading into 2025. I feel that Built has a high ceiling and is one to keep an eye on going forward.
