Holy Bull Winner Tiz the Law, Undefeated Independence Hall Among 23 Individual Betting Interests for Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Feb 04, 2020

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020) – Sakatoga Stable’s promising 3-year-old colt Tiz the Law, who scored a three-length victory in last Saturday’s $250,000 Holy Bull (Grade III) was made the 8-1 individual morning line favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) but “All Other 3-Year-olds” is expected to be the overall preference when betting concludes Sunday.

Veteran odds maker Mike Battaglia has installed “All Other 3-Year-Olds” as the 5-2 early choice in the field of 24 betting interests for the three-day pool, which opens Friday at noon (all times Eastern) and concludes Sunday at 6 p.m. The pari-mutuel field for the first pool of the New Year has closed as the bettors’ choice every year since the wager was inaugurated in 1999, and the final odds were 5-2 each of the last five years.

Tiz the Law, campaigned by the same team who won the 2003 Kentucky Derby with Funny Cide, garnered much attention as a 2-year-old following his impressive four-length victory in the $500,000 Champagne (GI) at Belmont Park. The colt by Constitution closed as the individual betting favorite in Pool 1 of the KDFW at odds of 11-1.

Also expected to take money in Pool 2 is Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks Racing Stables and Robert and Kathleen Verratti’s undefeated colt Independence Hall (10-1), who is scheduled to make his next start in Saturday’s $250,000 Sam F. Davis (GIII) at Tampa Bay Downs. The highly-regarded colt captured the $150,000 Jerome (Listed) and $150,000 Nashua (GIII) in his two previous starts.

Five-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert has a trio of contenders in Pool 2: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Frederick Hertrich III, John Fielding and Golconda Stables’ striking 7 ¼-length Sham (GIII) winner Authentic (30-1); George Bolton, Arthur Hoyeau, Barry Lipman and Mark Mathiesen’s eye-catching maiden winner Nadal (12-1); and Albaugh Family Stables and Spendthrift Farm’s undefeated colt Thousand Words (15-1), who captured the $100,000 Robert B. Lewis (GIII) last Saturday at Santa Anita.

Overall, there are 10 new betting interests in Pool 2 including John Oxley’s $200,000 Lecomte (GIII) winner Enforceable (30-1), Mike McCarty’s $150,000 Smarty Jones winner Gold Street (30-1) and debut winner Nadal.
