A pair of Kentucky Oaks qualifiers took place on opposite
coasts Saturday. In the $202,000 Chandelier (G2) at
Santa Anita, Chatalas made all
the pace and recorded her first stakes victory, scoring by 1 1/2 lengths. Just F Y I made her stakes debut a winning
one in the $400,000 Frizette (G1), drawing off to a 3 3/4-length decision over
a sloppy track at Aqueduct.
Both races awarded points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale to the top
finishers as part of the Road
to the Kentucky Oaks series. Chatalas and Just F Y I also guaranteed
themselves a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Santa Anita on
Nov. 3 by taking the “Win & You’re In” Challenge series events.
A debut maiden winner at Del Mar in late July, Chatalas didn’t
break sharply and wound up fourth behind impressive Del Mar Debutante (G1)
winner Tamara in her previous outing. The Mark Glatt-trained filly broke on top
in the Chandelier with Antonio Fresu, establishing opening splits on a short
lead before spurting clear in upper stretch.
Owned by Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners and Dan
Agnew, Chatalas completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.28. The bay daughter of Gun
Runner left the starting gate as the 3.10-1 third choice among nine runners.
Scalable rallied for second, a neck better than Dua in
third. Pacific Rose came next in fourth, and Gate to Paradise, Autumn Chill, Motet,
Pink Whitney, and favored Laurent rounded out the order of finish.
In the Frizette, Just F Y I made her move leaving the far
turn, striking the front and edging away in the final furlong of the one-mile
race. She remained perfect in her second career outing, breaking her maiden at
Saratoga in late August, and Junior Alvarado was up for Bill Mott.
Just F Y I is a daughter of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify
for owner/breeder George Krikorian. Off as 4.80-1 third choice in the six-horse
field, the bay filly stopped the teletimer in 1:37.59.
Central Avenue rallied from last for second. It was another
half-length to Life Talk, and even-money favorite Emery weakened to fourth.
Irish Maxima and Princess Indy followed.
