California Burrito turned back a determined challenge from Baby Max to win Saturday night’s 43rd running of the John Battaglia Memorial (Listed) at Turfway Park.

The John Battaglia Memorial, the first of Turfway Park’s two stops on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, is Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile race on the Tapeta track offers 20-10-6-4-2 qualifying points to the top five finishers.

The Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby resumes in the Hyacinth S. Tokyo, set for 12:25 a.m. ET late Saturday night.

Epic Ride, a 2024 Kentucky Derby alumnus, took trainer John Ennis to his first Derby, and the ride is not over yet. In January, the bay colt won his 4-year-old debut, and Sunday he makes his second start of 2025 in an allowance race at Turfway Park.

A strong 14-horse field has entered Saturday’s $1.25 million Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn Park. Eight of the entrants have already earned points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The $1.25 million Rebel (G2) is annually one of the most lucrative of Kentucky Derby (G1) preps. The 2025 edition Saturday at Oaklawn Park has the added bonus of being one of the deepest in terms of numbers and talent seen this cycle.

Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile $175,000 John Battaglia Memorial S. at Turfway Park has drawn a competitive 14-horse field, including two also-eligible entrants.
