Overview

Trainer Kenny McPeek has a Preakness (G1) and a Belmont (G1) on his resume in a lengthy training career. Can Mystik Dan be the one to give him an elusive Kentucky Derby?

A homebred for owners Lance Gasaway, Daniel Hamby, and 4G Racing, Mystik Dan is by Goldencents, the dual Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner. One of the first top horses by champion sire Into Mischief, Goldencents won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) at three prior to finishing 17th in the 2013 Kentucky Derby.

Mystik Dan is out of Ma’am, a four-time winner who hails from the family of Grade 1 performers Siphonic, Laragh, and Summer Front.

Ma’am’s family was largely best up to one mile and Goldencents’ progeny have an average winning distance of well under seven furlongs, though the fact Ma’am’s sire Colonel John stayed well enough to win the 1 1/4-mile Travers (G1) gives Mystik Dan some hope of staying the Derby distance.
