Overview

Eighteen years after his first Kentucky Derby victory with Giacomo, trainer John Shirreffs is on the Derby trail again with Mc Vay.

Bred by Band of Brothers, Mc Vay was a standout as a yearling and was sold for $1.25 million at the 2022 Saratoga Yearling Sale. He is raced by C R K Stable, best-known as the owner of Express Train, Switch, Kobe’s Back, and 2020 Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Honor A.P.

Mc Vay is by Constitution, a top-class sire in both the United States and Chile. He’s sired Classic winners in the U.S. up to 1 1/4 miles and in Chile up to 1 1/2 miles. His dam Dothraki Sea, a winner of two by Union Rags, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Dixie Chatter and Grade 3 winner Rumor.

Mc Vay has plenty of stamina on his sire’s side but a little less on the distaff side. Whether he’s up to the best at 1 1/4 miles remains to be seen.
