Road to the Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Shoplifted

Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stables and LNJ Foxwoods’ Shoplifted earned 10 points on the 2020 Road to the Kentucky Derby with a game tally in the $400,000 Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park on Dec. 15. The Steve Asmussen charge was a head clear under the line after completing the one-mile feature in 1:37.95 beneath Ricardo Santana Jr.

Shoplifted upped his lifetime mark to 5-2-1-0, with earnings that now stand at $385,500 following his initial stakes triumph. The two-year-old also posted a lifetime-best 93 Brisnet Speed figure at Remington Park.

The winner was unveiled on July 27 at Saratoga Race Course in a 5 1/2-furlong dash on the dirt. The bay drew off to a convincing score at the Spa, and was routed to the Hopeful Stakes (G1) for a second career outing. He rallied to be runner-up in that historic event and made his next two starts with Grade 1 foes at Santa Anita.

Fifth in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) in his California debut, he followed with a seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).

Shoplifted was bred in the Bluegrass State by Machmer Hall, Craig Brogden and Carrie Brogden. The son of Into Mischief passed through the sales ring on two occasions, bringing $525,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, prior to fetching a final bid of $800,000 at the Fasig-Tipton March Sale in the spring.

The colt is the first stakes victor produced from the winning Yes It’s True mare Shopit. He is from the same female line as Grade 1 queen Miss Shop, as well as Grade-2 winning sire Trappe Shot.

Shoplifted earned 105 Brisnet Late Pace in the Springboard Mile to suggest that he should be able to navigate longer distances on the 2020 Road to the Kentucky Derby as a sophomore. The female line of his catalog page is slanted towards speed, but the expensive colt has a lot of class and could evolve into a classic type with continued growth for top connections.
