Lewis Bay rallies wide to win Demoiselle

Lewis Bay made a successful stakes debut in Saturday’s $300,000 Demoiselle (G2) at Aqueduct, earning 10 qualifying points toward eligibility for next year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Saving ground until the far turn, Lewis Bay was shifted outside for racing room, swung very wide for the drive and ran strongly down the middle of the track to win by 1 3/4 lengths under Irad Ortiz Jr. The even-money favorite, Lewis Bay paid $4.10 and covered nine furlongs on a fast track in a pedestrian 1:53.41.

The multiple stakes-placed Thrilled, making her dirt debut, fared best of the three Todd Pletcher trainees in the Demoiselle by running second. Disco Rico was third.

Owned by Alpha Delta Stable and trained by Chad Brown, Lewis Bay finished second by a half-length in her debut September 13 at Belmont, but came back a month later to break her maiden by six lengths going seven furlongs.

Lewis Bay is a Bernardini half-sister to Grade 3 winners Misconnect and Winslow Homer. All were reared by the Summer Squall mare Summer Raven, who won the Tempted (G3) at Aqueduct as a juvenile.
