The wait is over thanks to Landaluce winner

A pair of stakes last Saturday showcased a couple of nice two-year-old fillies, so that’s where this week’s juvenile filly report begins.

Santa Anita Park’s Landaluce Stakes has proven a good spot to test the young lasses, and THEONEWEWAITEDFOR moved her record to a perfect two-for-two when inching clear to a 2 3/4-length victory over 3-5 favorite Miss Southern Miss.

The gray miss tracked just outside and behind the early pacesetter, and found herself between that runner and the favorite rounding the turn. Theonewewaitedfor continued motoring and began pulling off when shown the whip to finish 5 1/2 furlongs on the fast dirt in 1:03.82.

By Creative Cause and out of the multiple Grade 1-placed stakes-winning Eastern Echo mare Yolo Lady, Theonewewaitedfor earned an 87 BRIS Speed rating, actually dropping a bit from the 91 she garnered when breaking her maiden on May 26 at Santa Anita.

Trainer Mike Harrington admitted after the race he named the filly and believes she’ll have no trouble stretching out in distance.

Also last Saturday, BLING ON THE MUSIC romped by 8 1/2 lengths as the even-money favorite in the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity at Lone Star Park for trainer J.R. Caldwell.

The gray daughter of Too Much Bling was pressed throughout by Pure Grey before shaking loose from that rival and drawing off to stop the clock in :58.11 for five furlongs on the fast dirt.

While normally restricted stakes like this one wouldn’t make the cut for this commentary, Bling on the Music recorded her second straight effortless win and bumped her BRIS Speed figure to 90 after earning an 88 when breaking her maiden by 4 3/4 lengths at Lone Star on May 19.

The filly is out of the Action This Day mare Soft Music, who is a half-sister to the multiple stakes-placed dam of Grade 2 runner-up Laddie Boy.

One other race on Saturday caught the eye, this one taking place at Woodbine. LITTLE CHRISTY prevailed under a hand ride after setting all the splits to complete five furlongs on the all-weather Tapeta in :59.11.

Jockey Eurico Da Silva hustled the Silent Name miss out of the gate and straight to the lead, and the duo easily drew off to be 5 1/4 lengths clear on the wire. Little Christy was never challenged at any point and ended up with a 74 BRIS Speed rating for her career debut.

The Mike De Paulo pupil is out of the unraced Petionville mare Quiet Request, who is a half-sister to Grade 2-placed Mostacolli Mort. A little farther back, this female family has a rich Brazilian black-type hoofprint, including champions and Group 1 winners.

On Sunday, July 3, a trio of maidens starred at Belmont Park, Ellis Park and Santa Anita Park.

IRON MIZZ had the shortest winning margin of the three, holding by 1 1/2 lengths after leading throughout a Belmont six-furlong inner turf maiden to finish in 1:09.62.

The Mizzen Mast filly is trained by Todd Pletcher, and might not seem a good candidate for the Kentucky Oaks considering both of her starts thus far have come on turf. However, Iron Mizz’s dam, the stakes-winning More Than Ready mare Iron Goddess, was successful on both turf and dirt. Also, Iron Mizz’s fourth dam is David’s Tobin, from whom is descended dual classic winner and Horse of the Year Point Given.

Iron Mizz finished fifth in her debut over Belmont’s turf, earning a 66 BRIS Speed rating, but boosted that number to an 83 when breaking her maiden after setting some swift early fractions.

A little bit later at Ellis Park, IVY’S COLLEGE FUND dominated six rivals by 11 3/4 lengths for trainer Guillermo Rangel. The Albertus Maximus filly was never challenged and stopped the clock in :57.91 for five furlongs on the fast track.

Ivy’s College Fund was making her fourth start and finally seemed to figure things out this go around. Her BRIS Speed rating jumped to an 83 for the win, a 14-point increase from her prior try on the turf.

Ivy’s College Fund is out of the Deputy Wild Cat mare Whowhatwhy and is descended from the blue-hen mare Grey Flight.

Finally on July 3, BESIDES THE POINT wired a five-furlong Santa Anita maiden claimer by 5 1/2 lengths for trainer Bob Baffert.

The gray daughter of Concord Point did all the running in the race and drew off under what should have been a hand ride if not for an unnecessary crack of the whip from jockey Stewart Elliot. No one was making up any ground on the homebred lass as she posted a time of :58.72 over the fast dirt.

Besides the Point was making her career debut in this spot and garnered a 77 BRIS Speed rating for the effortless victory. She is out of the unraced Smart Strike mare Musical Rhythm and counts as her third dam champion Eliza, who finished second in the 1993 Kentucky Oaks.

One day later on Santa Anita Park’s Independence Day card, DYNAMITE CHARGE recorded a 4 1/4-length score over the favorite in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight.

None of the entrants in the race had ever started, but the Super Saver filly looked like a professional as she glided up the rail to take the lead on the backstretch. Trained by Doug O’Neill, she pulled away with a long, loping stride in the stretch to stop the clock in 1:04.56 on the fast dirt.

Dynamite Charge was awarded an 84 BRIS Speed figure for taking her debut so easily. The bay miss is out of the Closing Argument mare Allegation and traces back to champion De La Rose.

Concluding this week’s juvenile filly report is an Ohio-bred miss named SOMEDAY SOON. Usually these fillies aren’t quite on par as the ones racing at Belmont and Santa Anita, but the Proud Citizen lass showed herself to be something special when taking her debut by 8 1/2 lengths for trainer William Van Meter.

A muddy mess greeted the bay filly when she took to the track on Belterra Park’s July 4 card, but that didn’t discourage her. Someday Soon lunged out of the gate and sailed over the sloppy going to overtake the early leader and draw off for the easy win in a time of :58.82 for five furlongs.

The first registered foal out of the stakes-winning Repent mare Come Sunday, Someday Soon now boasts an 84 BRIS Speed rating for her initial start.
