Unique Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager Opens Four-Day Run on Thanksgiving Day
Nov 21, 2016 Darren Rogers
Offspring sired by Tapit, North America’s clear-cut leading stallion with 2016 earnings of more than $18.3 million, are 10-1 odds on the morning line for the second annual Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which provides bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year’s $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) on Saturday, May 6, 2017.
Derby fans can wager on the sire that will produce the winner of the upcoming Run for the Roses. Like the Future Wager, the sire wager features 23 individual sires of horses in this year’s crop of Kentucky Derby-age Thoroughbreds, along with an “All Others” betting interest.
The Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will be offered concurrently with Pool 1 of the traditional Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Both betting pools open a four-day run on Thanksgiving Day and close Sunday at 6 p.m. (all times Eastern).
Tapit, who has provided 138 winners from 290 runners this year, is 10-1 on odds maker Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds, but “All Other Sires” is the 8-1 favorite.
Here’s the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager field (with betting number and morning line odds): Bernardini (#1, 15-1), Bodemeister (#2, 20-1), Candy Ride (ARG) (#3, 15-1), Curlin (#4, 15-1), Distorted Humor (#5, 20-1), Flatter (#6, 30-1), Gemologist (#7, 20-1), Ghostzapper (#8, 15-1), Giant’s Causeway (#9, 12-1), Harlan’s Holiday (#10, 20-1), Into Mischief (#11, 20-1), Kitten’s Joy (#12, 20-1), Malibu Moon (#13, 20-1), Medaglia d’Oro (#14, 15-1), Pioneerof the Nile (#15, 12-1), Scat Daddy (#16, 20-1), Speightstown (#17, 20-1), Tapit (#18, 10-1), Tiznow (#19, 30-1), Unbridled’s Song (#20, 30-1), Uncle Mo (#21, 15-1), Union Rags (#22, 15-1), War Front (#23, 15-1) and “All Other Sires” (#24, 8-1).
Ten of the sires have offspring that are individual betting interests in the traditional Kentucky Derby Future Wager, including Bernardini (Hemsworth and Takaful) and Union Rags (Hookup and No Dozing) who have two each. The others are Candy Ride (ARG) (Mastery), Curlin (Irish War Cry), Ghostzapper (McCraken), Giant’s Causeway (Not This Time), Into Mischief (Practical Joke), Malibu Moon (Gormley), Pioneerof the Nile (Classic Empire) and Uncle Mo (Mo Town).
Uncle Mo sired 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and provided a $20.20 win payout in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager compared to his $6.60 payoff on Kentucky Derby Day. The Uncle Mo (Nyquist) and Curlin (Exaggerator) future Exacta returned $152.40, whereas it paid $30.60 on the day of the race.
“All Other Sires” was the 2-1 favorite a year ago with Tapit the 7-1 second choice. Uncle Mo was the 9-1 third betting choice.
Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, TwinSpires.com and other online wagering outlets and satellite wagering centers across North America. Total handle for last year’s inaugural Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager was $34,960 with $26,751 in Win bets and $8,209 in Exacta combinations.
No scratches or refunds of wagers are permitted in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager.
The Nov. 24-27 period will be the only time the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager is offered.
Churchill Downs has customized an official program page that contains various statistical information for each sire including its career highlights; record of progeny in the Kentucky Derby; a list of progeny that have earned $30,000 or more; current number of 2-year-olds; average yearling and 2-year-old sale price for the 2014 crop; the average winning distance for the sire’s offspring; and the number of individual runners, winners, stakes winners and total earnings for 2016 and the sire’s career.
