The Derby Dispatch for Friday, Feb. 15, 2019
Feb 15, 2019 Darren Rogers, Kevin Kerstein, Churchill Downs Communications
The Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series returns in earnest Saturday.
Over the next nine weekends, 3-year-old Thoroughbreds will continue their quest for points in select races to secure a berth in the starting gate for the 145th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve is action-packed this weekend with a quartet of races, led by Saturday’s Risen Star (GII) at Fair Grounds – the first “Championship Series” race that will award 50 points to the winner and 20 to the runner-up. The third and fourth-place finisher will earn 10 and 5 points, respectively.
The “Prep Season” races, which award 10-4-2-1 points to the Top 4, conclude with Saturday’s El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate and Monday’s Southwest (GIII) at Oaklawn Park. Also, the penultimate race on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby is early Sunday morning at Tokyo Racecourse with the Hyacinth. – Darren Rogers
WAR OF WILL TOPS RISEN STAR – Lecomte (Grade III) winner War of Will has been installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite among 14 runners in Saturday’s $400,000 Risen Star (GII), the second of three Kentucky Derby qualifiers at Fair Grounds. The 1 1/16-mile race also serves as the first of 16 races in the Championship Season portion of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series, with 50 points available to the winner.
War of Will picked up 10 points winning the Lecomte with authority, scoring by a four-length margin as the 8-5 favorite, and it marked the first start on a fast main track for the former turf stakes performer. Owned by Gary Barber and trained by Mark Casse, the son of War Front will have to overcome an outside starting position after receiving post 13 and Tyler Gaffalione will be back aboard the stalker.
Owendale comes next at 6-1 following a fine tally over a well-regarded allowance field on Jan. 17. By Into Mischief, the bay colt will make his first stakes attempt for Brad Cox and Shaun Bridgmohan retains the assignment. Lecomte runner-up Hog Creek Hustle has been pegged as the 8-1 third choice on the morning line and Florent Geroux sticks with the Vickie Foley-trained late runner.
Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) runner-up Plus Que Parfait will try to improve upon a fifth in the Lecomte and Julien Leparoux rides for Brendan Walsh. Limonite, unraced since rallying third in the Kentucky Jockey Club, will open his 2019 season for Steve Asmussen and adds a new jock in Brian Hernandez Jr.
After being scratched from the Lecomte, Mr. Money will make his first start since finishing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI). Regular rider Gabriel Saez has the call for Bret Calhoun. Country House invades from South Florida for Bill Mott following a good-looking maiden triumph at Gulfstream Park and Luis Saez will accompany the Lookin at Lucky colt.
Multiple turf stakes victor Henley’s Joy is scheduled to make his first dirt start and other contestants include Lecomte third-placer Manny Wah and Frolic More, who exits a rallying second to Owendale. Santa Anita maiden winner Kingly isn’t expected to ship from Southern California and his defection would allow Gun It to draw in from the also-eligible list. – James Scully, TwinSpires.com
PREP SEASON CLOSES WITH EL CAMINO REAL AND SOUTHWEST STAKES – The Road to the Kentucky Derby “Prep Season” will close this holiday weekend with Saturday’s $100,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields and Monday’s $500,000 Southwest Stakes (Grade III) at Oaklawn Park.
The El Camino Real Derby, run at 1 1/8 miles over the synthetic Tapeta surface, attracted a field of 13 led by gutsy maiden winner Kingly for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and front-running allowance winner Anothertwistafate for Northern California-based conditioner Blaine Wright.
Monday’s Southwest Stakes will be drawn Friday and is expected to feature Smarty Jones Stakes (GIII) winner Gray Attempt for veteran trainer Jinks Fires. The 1 1/16-mile race is a prep race for the March 16 Rebel (GII) and April 13 Arkansas Derby (GI). – Kevin Kerstein

SPOTLIGHT HORSE: WAR OF WILL
· Eyes will be on New Orleans Saturday for the return of Lecomte (GIII) winner War of Will – one of the top contenders in the mid-south for the Run for the Roses. War of Will, who recently closed at odds of 17-1 in the second Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, defeated 11 rivals in the Lecomte by four lengths for his first stakes victory on the dirt. A son of top grass stallion War Front, War of Will broke his maiden over the “sloppy” going at Churchill Downs on Nov. 24 following four tries on the turf.

DERBY DETAIL
BAFFERT DUO KINGLY, CHASING YESTERDAY REPORTEDLY SCRATCHING FROM RISEN STAR, RACHEL ALEXANDRA – Trainer Bob Baffert’s duo of Kingly and Chasing Yesterday will not ship from Southern California and be scratched from the Risen Star (GII) and Rachel Alexandra (GII), respectively, according to the Hall of Fame conditioner.
Kingly, a maiden winner at Santa Anita, is likely to run in Saturday’s El Camino Real Derby while plans for Chasing Yesterday have not been finalized.
With the scratch of Kingly from the Risen Star, also eligible Gun It can draw into the field. – Kevin Kerstein
LONGSHOT BETTORS REJOICE AT RISEN STAR TRENDS – Over the last 10 runnings of the Risen Star, the average odds of the winner is 18-1.
That stat, which is inflated by 135-1 longshot Ive Struck a Nerve’s narrow victory in 2013, could have handicappers searching deep within the past performances for Saturday’s 47th running of the 1 1/16-mile race.
The last post-time favorite to win the Risen Star was El Padrino in 2012 and the last post time favorite to hit the board was Vicar’s in Trouble – who finished third in 2014. – Kevin Kerstein
GRAY ATTEMPT HOPES TO BECOME ONLY SECOND HORSE TWO SWEEP SMARTY JONES/SOUTHWEST DOUBLE – Dwight Pruitt’s speedy Smarty Jones Stakes winner Gray Attempt will try to become only the second horse to sweep both the Smarty Jones Stakes and Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
The only other horse to sweep both races was Robert LaPenta and Harry Rosenblum’s Far Right in 2015. – Kevin Kerstein
THE APOLLO CURSE IS BROKEN BUT STATISTIC OF UNRACED 2-YEAR-OLDS STILL STAGGERING – While Justify ultimately silenced any believers in the Apollo Curse by becoming the first horse in 136 years to win the Kentucky Derby without a start as a 2-year-old, there are several Triple Crown nominees that hope to add their names to the historic list.
Out of the 362 Triple Crown nominees, 109, or 30.1%, did not race as at age 2, including promising runners Hidden Scroll, Dessman, Soldado, Growth Engine and Global Campaign.
At this point last year, Justify was on the cusp of making his career debut at Santa Anita on Feb. 18, 2018. – Kevin Kerstein
PORTION OF NOT THAT BRADY PURSE EARNINGS DONATED TO BELMONT PARK CHARITY – Withers Stakes (GIII) runner-up Not That Brady will make his next start in the March 9 Gotham and 10 percent of his purse earnings will be donated to the Belmont Child Care Association, according to his owners.
Owned in partnership by trainer Rudy Rodriguez along with Michael Imperio and Lianna Stables, the chestnut-son of Big Brown finished only a head behind Withers winner Tax at odds of 8-1. – Kevin Kerstein
SAM F. DAVIS RUNNER-UP KENTUCKY WILDCAT OFF TRIPLE CROWN TRAIL – Sam F. Davis (GIII) runner-up Kentucky Wildcat injured his right foreleg and had surgery to repair a condylar fracture, according to trainer Tom Albertrani.
The impressive maiden winner is owned by Godolphin Racing. – Kevin Kerstein
SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN HEADS BATTAGLIA AT TURFWAY – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (GI) third-place finisher Somelikeithotbrown heads a field of 10 3-year-olds in Friday night’s $75,000 John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park – a local prep for the March 9 Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII).
The 1 1/16-mile race over the synthetic Polytrack surface was originally scheduled for Feb. 8 but the card was cancelled due to wind chills in the lower 20s.
Carded as Race 5 at approximately 8:12 p.m. EDT, the race is named after longtime Turfway Park and Churchill Downs track announcer and odds maker Mike Battaglia’s late father. – Kevin Kerstein
JIMMY WINKFIELD WINNER HAIKAL LIKELY TO RUN IN GOTHAM – Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin’s New York-based assistant Joe Lee reported Shadwell Stable’s Haikal could run in the Gotham Stakes following his rail-skimming victory in Saturday’s Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct.
The bay son of Daaher rallied to get past pace-setting Joevia in the final strides of the Winkfield, a seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds. – Kevin Kerstein
OAKS, TURF CLASSIC NOMS DUE – Early nominations for the Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) and the Old Forester Turf Classic (GI) close Saturday. For more information: http://bit.ly/2spFso1 – Kevin Kerstein
