The Derby Dispatch for March 7, 2019
Mar 07, 2019
This week’s Road to the Kentucky Derby features a stakes tripleheader on Saturday.
Originally, four races were scheduled but the San Felipe (Grade II) has been tabled while Santa Anita’s track undergoes additional extensive testing.
The $300,000 Gotham (GIII) at one mile begins Saturday’s stakes procession at 5:09 p.m. (all times Eastern) and is followed by the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII) at 1 1/16 miles at 5:25 p.m. and the $200,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII) over 1 1/8 miles on Polytrack at 6:37 p.m.
Aqueduct’s Gotham features the much-anticipated return of California-based Instagrand, who won his two juvenile sprints last summer by a combined 20 lengths.
The Tampa Bay Derby is headlined by impressive Pasco winner Win Win Win, Sam F. Davis (GIII) hero Well Defined and runaway Fair Grounds allowance winner Dream Maker.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (GI) third and John Battaglia Memorial winner Somelikeithotbrown is the horse to beat in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.
Each lucrative race will help determine the lineup for this year’s $3 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I). A total of 85 points will be awarded to the top four finishers in the Gotham and Tampa Bay Derby: 50 to first, 20 to second, 10 to third and 5 to fourth. The Jeff Ruby Steaks point scale is 20-8-4-2.
Total points accrued by 3-year-old Thoroughbreds in Road to the Kentucky Derby races will ultimately determine the preference list for the 1 ¼-mile classic at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4.
Also thrown into Saturday’s mix are a trio of Road to the Kentucky Oaks points-scoring races for 3-year-old fillies: the $250,000 Busher over one mile at Aqueduct at 5:40 p.m.; the $100,000 Bourbonette Oaks over one mile on Polytrack at Turfway Park at 5:51 p.m.; and the $200,000 Honeybee (GIII) over 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn Park at 6:09 p.m. – Darren Rogers
NEXT RACE PLANS IN FLUX FOR BAFFERT DUO GAME WINNER, IMPROBABLE FOLLOWING SANTA ANITA CLOSURE – Two of the top contenders for Kentucky Derby 145, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade I) champion Game Winner and Los Alamitos Futurity (GI) winner Improbable, were originally scheduled to face one another in Saturday’s San Felipe (GII) but following the postponement of the race, the two horses will breeze Sunday at Los Alamitos with their next race plans being determined following the work, according to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
One of the options for the two Grade I winners could be Oaklawn Park’s Rebel (GII) on Saturday, March 16. On Wednesday, Oaklawn Park announced that if the Rebel drew 20 or more entrants, the race could be split in two divisions. Nominations close Friday and the race will draw Wednesday. If the split occurs, the purse will go from $1 million to $750,000 for each division.
In accordance with Road to the Kentucky Derby rules about split races, a total of 63.75 points would be distributed in each division – 37.5 to first, 15 to second, 7.5 to third and 3.75 to fourth. The points correspond with 75% of the original purse. – Kevin Kerstein
INSTAGRAND GETS BACK TO WORK IN GOTHAM AT AQUEDUCT – Put away for the season after two authoritative victories to start his career last summer, Instagrand gets back to work Saturday in the $300,000 Gotham (GIII), a one-mile Road to the Kentucky Derby series prep at Aqueduct.
Winner on debut at Los Alamitos by 10 lengths in June, Instagrand won by approximately the same margin in the six-furlong Best Pal (GII) at Del Mar in his next start for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. It was decided soon after that Instagrand would be put away for the rest of the season to prepare for a three-year-old campaign.
“We think we have him prepared (for stretching out in distance),” Hollendorfer said. “We’re very happy to have Javier Castellano riding. I feel like our horse has speed and I think he can also rate if we have to.”
While Instagrand has yet to earn any Kentucky Derby qualifying points, rivals Knicks Go and Mind Control have both done so. Knicks Go won the Breeders’ Futurity (GI) at 70-1 and placed in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) at 40-1 last fall, but ran up the track in the Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) and Sam F. Davis (GIII) in his last two starts.
“I think he did need that last race, especially on that Tampa track which can be a little tiring at times,” trainer Ben Colebrook said. “I think he’ll like the configuration (at Aqueduct) but the surface is a question mark. He has tactical speed which will help him. Maybe now that he’s in a race where he’s not the favorite, like the last two, maybe he’ll go back to the old Knicks Go.”
Mind Control didn’t earn any points by winning the Hopeful (GI) or finishing unplaced in the Juvenile, but earned 10 when registered a season-opening win in the $150,000 Jerome on New Year’s Day over the Gotham track and distance.
“He’s going into this race better than he went into the Jerome in terms of maturity and filling out. He’s really starting to put the muscle on in the right places,” trainer Gregory Sacco said.
Front-running Not That Brady shortens up a furlong after finishing a game second in the Withers (GIII) last month. Stretching out from seven panels is Haikal, photo-finish winner of the $150,000 Jimmy Winkfield last time, while Bob Baffert sends in stakes-placed allowance winner Much Better. The field is rounded out by Tikhvin Flew and Family Biz.
The Gotham awards Kentucky Derby qualifying points of 50-20-10-5 top the top four finishers, with the winner virtually assured of earning enough points to earn a Derby starting position. The Gotham can be watched and wagered on at TwinSpires.com. – Vance Hanson/Brisnet.com
DREAM MAKER, WIN WIN WIN BRING INTRIGUE TO 11-HORSE TAMPA BAY DERBY – Dream Maker returns to the stakes ranks after an 8 ½-length allowance romp and Win Win Win stretches out to two turns following a track record-setting performance. The promising 3-year-olds highlight a field of 11 in Saturday’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII).
Contested at 1 1/16 miles, the Road to the Kentucky Derby series qualifier offers points on a 50-20-10-5 scale to the top four finishers.
Dream Maker romped when making his career debut at Churchill Downs last June but needed three months off before recording a disappointing fifth in the Hopeful (GI) at Saratoga. Trainer Mark Casse brought his charge back for the Breeders’ Futurity (GI) at Keeneland five weeks later but Dream Maker never fired after being roughed up at the break, retreating to last as the 5-2 favorite.
Unraced for four months, the gray son of Tapit opened his 3-year-old campaign with a scintillating display of superiority at Fair Grounds. Dream Maker netted a 91 BRIS Speed rating winning a 1 1/16-mile allowance and was flattered when the runner-up came back to win. Florent Geroux will be back aboard.
Win Win Win posted an impressive 7 ¼-length tally in the seven-furlong Pasco at Tampa Bay Downs on Jan. 19 and registered a field-best last-out BRIS Speed figure (101). A Florida-bred son of Hat Trick, the dark bay colt does his best running from off the pace and Irad Ortiz Jr. picks up the mount for Michael Trombetta.
Sam F. Davis (GIII) upsetter Well Defined also rates as a major contender. The gelding has proven to be an all-or-nothing type for Kathleen O’Connell, recording three convincing wire-to-wire stakes wins when he makes the early lead and a pair of unplaced finishes in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Mucho Macho Man Stakes when he doesn’t, and there isn’t an abundance of speed in the Tampa Bay Derby field. Well Defined steps up to face better off a sharp performance but remains a threat to lead all the way with Pablo Morales.
Other runners of interest include Tacitus, a Bill Mott-trained Tapit colt who will make his first appearance since a good-looking maiden win at Aqueduct in November; Outshine and The Right Path, the one-two finishers from a recent allowance at Gulfstream Park; and Swale (GIII) runner-up Zelden. – James Scully/TwinSpires.com
SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN INSTALLED AS 8-5 FAVORITE IN JEFF RUBY STEAKS – Skychai Racing and Sand Dollar Stables’ Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade I) third-place finisher Somelikeithotbrown was installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite for Saturday’s Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII) – run at 1 1/8 miles over the Polytrack surface at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.
Trained by Mike Maker, Somelikeithotbrown enters the Jeff Ruby Steaks following a victory in Turfway’s local prep for the race – the $75,000 John Battaglia Memorial. The colt by Big Brown sports a 6-2-2-1 record with $246,918 in earnings but is in search of his first graded stakes score.
Among the competitors to Somelikeithotbrown in the Jeff Ruby Steaks is undefeated colt Skywire for owners Gary Barber and Lucio Tucci. Trained by Mark Casse, Skywire is 2-for-2 in his young career with a maiden victory in December at Woodbine and a six-length score in an off the turf, first level allowance, race at Gulfstream Park.
Skywire, is hoping to be only the second horse in at least 10 years to win the 1 1/8-mile race after exiting a win on the dirt. The other horse to do so was Went the Day Well in 2012.
The Jeff Ruby Steaks will award points to the Top 4 finishers in the race on a 20-8-4-2 scale. Post time for the race is 5:51 p.m. EST. – Kevin Kerstein
COURSE SPECIALISTS WIN EUROPEAN ROAD TO KENTUCKY DERBY SEREIS PREPS – The European Road to the Kentucky Derby wound its way through England and Ireland in the span of 20 minutes Wednesday evening, with course specialists winning the Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes at Kempton Park and Patton Stakes at Dundalk.
Both the Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes and Patton offered qualifying points of 20-8-4-2 to the top four finishers in the European Road to the Kentucky Derby series. The highest point earner in the series will earn an invitation to participate in the Kentucky Derby (GI).
Jahbath, an odds-on favorite in both England and in the U.S. pools, won for the third time in as many starts at Kempton when taking the Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes by two lengths under Jim Crowley. Getchagetchagetcha finished second by a half-length over Target Zone, with Chairmanoftheboard a neck behind in fourth.
Owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained by William Haggas, Jahbath paid $2.60 in the U.S. pool and covered one mile on the all-weather track in 1:38.78. A son of Mukhadram, Jahbath has now won four of five starts overall. However, the bay is not currently Triple Crown nominated. The only current nominee in the field, Spanish Mission, finished fifth.
At Dundalk, Playa Del Puente edged Western Australia by a half-length to win the Patton Stakes, also over one mile on the all-weather. Numerian and Van Beethoven finished third and fourth, respectively.
Owned by Huang Kai Wen and trained by Mick Halford, Playa Del Puente covered the course in 1:37.37 under Ronan Whelan and paid $6.40 in the U.S. pool. Third in his debut last August at The Curragh on turf, Playa Del Puente has won his last three in succession at Dundalk.
Like Jahbath, Playa Del Puente is not currently nominated to the Triple Crown. Western Australia, whose run through the stretch was hampered from a bump by tiring leader Colfer Me, and fourth-place finisher Van Beethoven are. The Coolmore-owned duo earned eight points and two points, respectively. Western Australia now has a total of 10 points in the series. Points earned by non-Triple Crown nominees can be retroactively restored once the earners are made nominated.
The final European Road to the Kentucky Derby series prep will take place April 11 at Chelmsford City, England. The Cardinal Condition Stakes will offer qualifying points of 30-12-6-3 to the top four finishers. – Vance Hanson/Brisnet.com
MEYDAN SUPER SATURDAY PROGRAM FEATURES ESTIHDAAF IN UAE DERBY PREP – The major prep for the March 30 UAE Derby (Grade II) will be held Saturday at Meydan Racecourse with the Al Bastakiya and features UAE 2000 Guineas (GIII) winner Estihdaaf.
Owned by Godolphin and trained by world-class horseman Saeed bin Suroor, Estihdaaf stamped himself as one of the top contenders to the UAE Derby – a race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series that will offer 100 points to the winner – following his 5 ½-length score in the one-mile Guineas.
The Al Bastakiya will go as Race 2 with a post time of 7:35 a.m. EST. – Kevin Kerstein

SPOTLIGHT HORSE: CODE OF HONOR
· Code of Honor stamped himself as a Kentucky Derby (Grade I) contender following his late-closing victory in last Saturday’s Fountain of Youth (GII) at Gulfstream Park. Owned by longtime horseman Will Farish and trained by veteran and Hall of Fame conditioner Shug McGaughey, Code of Honor could be following the path of former stablemate, and Kentucky Derby-winning colt Orb, to the first Saturday in May.
· Owner information: Will Farish is a native of Houston, Texas and a lifelong horseman. Farish owns Lanes End Farm, one of the top sales and breeding companies in the world. Farish began owning racehorses in the 1960s and has since bred champions Mineshaft, A.P. Indy, Charismatic and Lemon Drop Kid. The former chairman of the board of Churchill Downs from 1992-2001, Farish has served a steward, vice chairman of the Jockey Club and a member of the Board of Directors at Keeneland. In 2001, Farish was appointed by President George W. Bush as the United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James.
· Trainer information: Claude Ray “Shug” McGaughey III has trained horses for 40 years and has won nearly every race in the U.S. including the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb. McGaughey, a native of Lexington, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004 – an achievement that encapsulated his career of campaigning champions Personal Ensign and Easy Goer along with Hall of Famer Lure. McGaughey, known for his quiet demeanor, was prominent in the 1989 Triple Crown with Easy Goer who was the runner-up to Sunday Silence in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes prior to his Belmont score over that rival. McGaughey has amassed 2,050 victories with his horses earning $145,692,479. – Kevin Kerstein
SCULLY’S KENTUCKY DERBY REPORT
CODE OF HONOR REBOUNDS, BOURBON WAR FINISHES FAST
Code of Honor orchestrated a turnaround in Saturday’s Fountain of Youth (GII), shrugging off a well-beaten fourth earlier in the Gulfstream Park meet to post a 9-1 upset, and the 50-point prize virtually guarantees a berth in a 20-horse Kentucky Derby field. John Velazquez was up for Shug McGaughey on the Will Farish homebred.
Bourbon War enhanced his reputation as well with a fast-closing second and will take plenty of betting action when stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for his final Kentucky Derby prep race. Circumstances didn’t go as planned for 6-5 favorite Hidden Scroll, who dueled through fast fractions with a hopeless longshot before weakening to fourth.
BRIS Speed numbers have been down for Kentucky Derby hopefuls this year and the Fountain of Youth didn’t come back fast. Code of Honor registered a 95 Speed figure, only the second winner this century who failed to reach triple digits, but remains eligible to improve upon the confidence-builder. He definitely appeared to need the race from a fitness perspective.
Speed ratings can increase dramatically as 3-year-olds build toward the first Saturday in May and 2013 Kentucky Derby victor Orb, who was also trained by McGaughey, serves as a prime example. Orb garnered only an 89 BRIS Speed rating when opening his 3-year-old season with an allowance victory at Gulfstream but came back to post a 102 Speed winning the Fountain of Youth next out.
Four qualifiers in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series were scheduled for this Saturday (March 9) but Santa Anita has canceled racing this week to evaluate track issues, delaying an anticipated showdown between top-ranked Bob Baffert-trained stablemates Game Winner and Improbable in the San Felipe (GII). No indication when the race will be rescheduled.
The Tampa Bay Derby (GII) and Gotham (GIII) at Aqueduct are worth a total of 85 points to the top four finishers (50-20-10-5) and the Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII) on Turfway Park’s Polytrack offers 34 (20-8-4-2).
Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager begins Friday and closes Sunday at 6 p.m. (ET).
Fountain of Youth
Code of Honor showed some speed leaving the starting gate from his rail post and eased back on the first turn to sit a good stalking trip in fifth, about eight lengths behind a blistering early pace in :22.80 and :45.69. Fractions were nearly a second faster than a Grade II sprint event the race before and Code of Honor took advantage while accelerating into contention on the far turn.
Hidden Scroll was still clinging to a short lead in upper stretch but Code of Honor easily dismissed the tiring pacesetter and opened up a clear lead. Bourbon War rallied with a flourish on the far outside to make it interesting late, but Code of Honor held to win by three-quarters of a length.
A smart debut maiden winner at Saratoga, Code of Honor fell out of the starting gate but rebounded to finish a solid second in the Champagne (GI) next out. Installed as the 5-1 third choice on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile morning line, he was forced to scratch the morning of the race due to a fever. McGaughey planned to reroute the colt to the Remsen (GII) at Aqueduct in early December but removed him consideration after a subpar workout the week of the race.
Code of Honor returned from a three-month layoff as the 4-5 favorite in the Jan. 5 Mucho Macho Man at a one-turn mile but never made an impact, retreating through the stretch to finish nearly eight lengths back in fourth. He was freshened 56 days in advance of the 1 1/16-mile Fountain and McGaughey attributed the improved performance to aggressive training preparations: “After the Mucho Macho Man, I said listen, we’re going to train him. If he takes it he takes it, and he took it. He was good with what we were putting into him, so we kept doing it and we felt like he was going to come down here (from Payson Park training center) and run well.”
Code of Honor has stamina and turf influences in his sire line. He’s by Noble Mission, a son of Galileo and full brother to unbeaten European superstar and fast-rising sire Frankel. Code of Honor’s broodmare sire (Dixie Union) produced Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, but the immediate female family raises some concern for distances past nine furlongs. His dam, Reunited, captured the six-furlong Thoroughbred Club of America (GIII) and raced exclusively in sprints during her 10-race career. She hails from Tivli, a stakes-winning daughter of Mt. Livermore (sire of champion sprinters Housebuster and Orientate) who never raced past 6 ½ furlongs from her 24 career starts.
When asked about added ground, McGaughey highlighted the sire and his pupil’s disposition: “I don’t think distance will be a problem at all…(Code of Honor) is a very efficient kind of horse in the way he moves.”
The 1 1/16-mile distance at Gulfstream features a short stretch (wire at the sixteenth pole) and Code of Honor took advantage of the configuration, appearing spent as Bourbon War blew past him in the gallop out between finishing poles. But considering he got little out of only one start over the previous five months, the lightly-raced sophomore had reason to be tired after passing an extreme class check.
The chestnut possesses tactical speed and displayed a keen turn of foot while cornering better than Bourbon War, and the Fountain of Youth was his first two-turn start. The top two are under serious consideration for the $1 million Florida Derby (GI) at Gulfstream on March 30 and Bourbon War will be the shorter price again if both show up.
Unlike the winner, Bourbon War was exiting an encouraging performance over the track. The Mark Hennig-trained Tapit colt powerfully dispatched entry-level allowance foes in mid-January and registered commendable BRIS Speed (96) and Late Pace (107) numbers for the 2 ¼-length decision. Bettors hammered him down to the 4-1 third choice from a 10-1 morning line on Saturday.
Bourbon War reached the far turn almost two lengths behind Code of Honor and lost ground to his rival through the bend. He started making headway approaching the stretch and when Irad Ortiz Jr. guided his mount extremely wide, Bourbon War responded with a visually-impressive closing kick in the straightaway.
He was the only one finishing at the end and ran out of room on the wire. Bourbon War established himself as major Kentucky Derby contender in the process and it was easy to come away bullish on his chances, but fast finishes for a minor award can be misleading sometimes because the horses in front are stopping. Bourbon War remains a developing type with an abundance of potential this spring.
Hidden Scroll was knocked sideways leaving the starting gate by the horse to his immediate outside and Joel Rosario hustled his mount to establish forward position after the rough beginning. That didn’t work out well for an inexperienced colt. Hidden Scroll took his cue and set sail for the lead, outgunning 132-1 longshot Gladiator King, who eventually weakened to last after being run into submission by the overwhelming favorite.
Bill Mott thought Hidden Scroll would be tractable enough to sit second behind a horse like Gladiator King and came away disappointed by his charge’s antics, but he recognized the silver lining and will keep the well-bred Juddmonte Farms homebred on the Kentucky Derby trail. Hidden Scroll performed like an enormous talent in his debut, winning wire-to-wire in a fast time (102 BRIS Speed rating), and kept fighting Saturday despite shortening stride by the completion of the far turn. Considering how tired he appeared, I was surprised to see Hidden Scroll nearly outfinish Vekoma, who got up in the final stride for third as the 3-1 second choice.
Hidden Scroll figures to benefit greatly from the experience and whether it’s turf or dirt, the well-bred Hard Spun colt looks capable of winning big races down the road if he remains healthy. We’ll learn in the coming weeks whether he has the mental fortitude for a legitimate Kentucky Derby bid.
Other 3-year-olds of interest
Roadster returned in outstanding condition on March 1, squaring off against four foes in a Santa Anita entry-level allowance at a two-turn mile. Unraced since a third in the Del Mar Futurity (GI) on March 1, the Speedway Stables color bearer stalked the pace up close and advanced to collar the pacesetter leaving the far turn. He took a short lead while still under a hold in upper stretch and when Mike Smith asked for run, Roadster drew away sharply and won geared down late by a 2 ½-length margin. There was plenty to like about this performance and Roadster is in the barn of five-time Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert. A gray son of Quality Road, Roadster has the pedigree for longer distances being a half-brother to Ascend, winner of the 1 ¼-mile Woodford Reserve Manhattan (GI); and Moro Tap, who placed in the 1 ½-mile Louisville H. (GIII). It will be interesting to see where Roadster winds up next.
Runner-up Nolo Contesto received a rough trip, stuck down on the inside most of the way, but appeared to be hitting his best stride late and galloped out well after the finish line. I don’t know why John Sadler didn’t ship the Jan. 4 maiden winner out of town for another prep race after scratching him from the Feb. 2 Robert B. Lewis due to sloppy track conditions, with Nolo Contesto missing no time on the worktab as he essentially waited a month for this allowance race, but the Pioneerof the Nile ridgling remains a nice prospect for Hronis Racing.
Previews
Instagrand broke his maiden by 10 lengths the first time out and followed with a spectacular 10 ¼-length victory in the Best Pal (GII) at Del Mar. A $1.2 million 2-year-old sales purchase, the son of Into Mischief remained on the worktab for the next few weeks before owner Larry Best announced the exciting colt would be given the rest of the year.
He returned to the worktab in late December for Jerry Hollendorfer and the one-turn mile Gotham distance should benefit Instagrand, who appears capable of overwhelming the competition off the layoff.
The Tampa Bay Derby looks like a good betting race. Win Win Win registered a 101 BRIS Speed rating for a track record-setting victory in the seven-furlong Pasco at Tampa Bay Downs and looms a major contender if handles the stretch out to two turns. Well Defined catches a field lacking early speed following a comfortable wire-to-wire upset in the Sam F. Davis (GIII) and is unbeaten from a pair of two-turn starts when able to dictate the pace. Dream Maker rates as another top threat following an 8 ½-length allowance triumph at Fair Grounds.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (GI) third-placer Somelikeithotbrown made a seamless transition to synthetic like so many turf horses do when capturing the Feb. 15 John Battaglia Memorial by open lengths and will be the one to beat among 11 rivals in the Jeff Ruby Steaks.
